Twitter is a very useful tool for disseminating information and news. It’s also a great tool to keep an eye on what’s happening in the world (media monitoring anyone?) – as long as you’re following the right people.  That’s the trick.  Here’s what you might not realize – a lot of people looking to make money online are creating Twitter profiles and feverishly trying to amass followers.  They send out Tweets that have links to affiliate sites.  When you click the link, the person gets credit and earns money each time they send someone to the affiliate.  So, if you “follow” them, it’s like checking that box on your credit card privacy statement that says, “Yes, I would like to receive exciting offers from…”  You’re mailbox will fill with useless advertisements and likely annoy you.  Even worse, you might get fooled by Tweets like, “I can’t believe I just found this (link)! It’s amazing, but I don’t think it will be around long. Check it out!

Enter TwitChuck — There’s now an easy way to run a quick check on any Twitter user and find out if he/she is a potential spammer. It will assess activity, followers and postings of that user and give detailed feedback explaining why you should or should not follow him/her.  Here’s what it checks:

  • How “popular” the user is
  • If the user has been around for a while
  • How frequently the Twitter user posts information
  • Looks for spam posts, terms, or links and if they’re likely to post spam

This is an easy (and free) site to use.  So here’s all you need to do.  Go to TwitChuck.com and enter the user name of person in question.  Hit enter and it will return an analysis and recommendation.  Simple as that!
